For other Library Templates you can import, see the Importable Library Templates page.
AncestralSources.ora-templates (v0.06) includes Library Templates for adding information in Family Historian via its companion program Ancestral Sources.
The download file includes Library Templates that are also included in the Enter.ora-templates download file. Those templates are described on its help page. You do not have to download and install those templates separately.
This page includes collection templates and Library Templates. The collection templates refer to the Library Templates. At present, the collections are all Findmypast (FMP) collections for the UK.
Setup
- Download AncestralSources.ora-templates.
Save the file in your Documents\ORA\Settings folder.
- Import the Library Templates using the [Import Templates...] button in the Library Templates panel on the OraSettings page.
Import all the Library Templates included in the file.
- Download Findmypast-UK-Census.ora-collection.
Save the file in your Documents\ORA\Settings folder.
- Import the collection templates using the [Import Collection...] button in the Services and Collections panel on the OraSettings page.
Importing the collection templates will replace any existing templates for those collections. If you do not want to replace your existing templates, you may add the required Text Templates and Auto Type Templates manually. Those templates are described below.
FMP Census Usage
Most of the steps will be familiar to experienced Ancestral Sources users. ORA automates a couple of the data entry steps. ORA does not automate selecting existing people or adding new people.
When you find a Findmypast census record with information that you want to add to Family Historian, follow the procedure described below.
- Start Ancestral Sources if it is not running already.
- Open your Family Historian project in Ancestral Sources if it is not opened already.
- Choose Census Editor from the View menu if the Census Editor is not visible already.
- Change the "Type" to "Census".
- Change the "Region" to the country associated with the current census record.
- Change the "Year" to the year associated with the current census record.
- Move the mouse to the "Place" textbox and click so that the text cursor is in that textbox.
At this point, the top of your Ancestral Sources window will look something like this:
- Switch to your browser and to the tab that shows the census record.
- Click the "AS Census Source" Auto Type button. If you use collection templates provided on this page, that will be Auto Type button #1.
- ORA will switch to Ancestral Sources and enter the Place, Address, and Ref ID values.
For an example 1901 Census Record on Findmypast, the resulting source fields will be set as shown here:
- In Ancestral Sources, follow the procedure to navigate to a person or add a person so the person has a new entry in the data grid.
As an example, I've added "Thomas Jones" as a new person:
- Click the cell indicated by the instructions for the specific census collection. That is typically the "Relation" cell, but varies for some census templates. The proper cell is always the first non-name cell in the row, i.e., the first cell that is editable.
- Switch to your browser and to the tab that shows the census record.
- Use alt-click to update any Field values, such as Where Born, if you prefer your version over the version transcribed by Findmypast and extracted by ORA.
Several Findmypast census collections include two versions of the same Field, for example, some entries in the 1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census include both "Birth county" and "Birth county as transcribed". In those cases, ORA favors the "as transcribed" version. When both Fields are present, and you want to modify the value, you should alt-click to edit the "as transcribed" version.
- If necessary, and if the data is available, use alt-click to update any manual (AKA "ENTER") Fields. Manual Fields are per-collection, but some Manual Fields do not apply to all the regions covered by a collection. For more details, please see the note below about Manual Fields.
In the example, I've set the "Employ Status" Field to "Worker". The screenshot below shows a portion of the updated OraPanel:
- Click the "AS Census Person" Auto Type button. If you use collection templates provided on this page, that will be Auto Type button #2.
- ORA will switch to Ancestral Sources and enter values in the cells of the row.
Here's how the grid cells were updated for the example census record:
- Repeat the process starting at step 11 for each person in the household.
When you are done entering people, and you have added source text and/or a source image if desired, use the File > Save Entry to File command to update your Family Historian project.

General-Purpose Templates
AS-Age
[lib.AS-Age:field-name]
Converts an age value to Auto Type keystrokes valid in Ancestral Sources Age-type cells. Converts digit characters and "y", "m", and "d" in the value to "{c}" to avoid an issue where Ancestral Sources ignores characters typed by ORA into Age-type fields. Other characters are ignored. For example, "14 MOS" becomes "{1}{4}{m}". Special cases: zero must be sent as {NUMPAD0}, space must be sent as {SPACE}.
Template
[=:asa.age:[{1}:replace:[^0-9ymd ]::gi]]
[asa.age:lowercase:replace:([1-9ymd]):{$1}:g:replace:0:{NUMPAD0}:g:replace:[ ]:{space}:g]
AS-Number
[lib.AS-Number:field-name]
Converts digits in a value to "{d}" to avoid an issue where Ancestral Sources ignores digits typed by ORA into numeric-only fields. For example, "65" becomes "{6}{5}". Special case: zero must be sent as {NUMPAD0}.
Template
[{1}:replace:([1-9]):{$1}:g:replace:0:{NUMPAD0}:g]
AS-YesNo
[lib.AS-YesNo:field-name]
Emits "Yes" or "No" depending on the value of the given field.
Template
<
[?:{1}/^Y/]Yes
|
[?:{1}/^N/]No

Enter
[lib.Enter]
Use in a Text Template to create a Field with the value "ENTER". The name of the Field is the Text Template's name. Use Alt-Click to edit the value in the OraPanel.
Template
<[{1:^o.template name}]|ENTER>
EnterClear
[lib.EnterClear:field-1:field-2:field-3:field-4]
If a Field's value is "ENTER", sets the Field to empty. The assignment is not persistent, so the Field is cleared only for the duration of the current template. You may provide from one to four Field names.
EnterClear is intended for use primarily in Auto Type Templates.
Example:
[lib.EnterClear:Maiden Surname]
[Name]<; Maiden Surname: [Maiden Surname]>
Template
{{1:<[?:{1}!=ENTER]|[=:{1}:]>}}
{{2:<[?:{2}!=ENTER]|[=:{2}:]>}}
{{3:<[?:{3}!=ENTER]|[=:{3}:]>}}
{{4:<[?:{4}!=ENTER]|[=:{4}:]>}}
EnterIgnore
<[lib.EnterIgnore:fieldName]|value when not ENTER>
If a Field's value is "ENTER", returns true. Use in a conditional expression to ignore a Field with the value set to "ENTER".
EnterIgnore is intended for use primarily in Auto Type Templates.
Example:
[Name]; Maiden Surname: <[lib.EnterIgnore](unknown)|[Maiden Surname]>;
Template
[?:{1}=ENTER]
EnterPrompt
[lib.EnterPrompt:fieldName]
Use EnterPrompt in Auto Type Templates where you want to prompt for the value of a Field only if the Field has the value "ENTER". The assignment prompt is persistent, so the Field value will be set to whatever text you key in response to the prompt and will retain that value until the page is refreshed or you navigate away from it.
EnterPrompt is intended for use in Auto Type Templates. Typically, you do not want to use an assignment prompt in a Text Template because you will be prompted as soon as you visit a record in the collection.
Example:
[lib.EnterPrompt:Volume]
[Name]<; Volume: [Volume]>
Template
<[?:{1}!=ENTER]|[==:{1}]>
FMP-AS-UK-Census-Address

FMP-AS-UK-Census-Where-Born
[lib.FMP-AS-UK-Census-Where-Born]
Emits a value intended for the "Where Born" cell in Census-type templates for the UK. Assembles a value by concatenating town, county, and country, then uses that value or the "Birth place" Field value depending on which has more parts. Used by Text Templates for UK census collections.

Manual Fields
Several AS templates include values that are not extracted as part of the associated collection. The collection templates include "ENTER" fields for those values. To enter the value manually, use alt-click to edit the value of the Field.
For collections that include records from multiple regions, some of the manual Fields may not apply to all regions. For example, the 1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census collection includes four "ENTER" Fields: Employ Status, At Home, Language Spoken, and Number of Rooms. However:
- England - Uses Employ Status and At Home
- Wales - Uses Employ Status, At Home, and Language Spoken
- Scotland - Uses Employ Status, At Home, and Number of Rooms
